Budgie Lifespan

In some ways it is less scary to go out and buy a cat or dog, at least then you know you will get a max life span of say 17 years? However if you are thinking of going out and buying yourself a pet bird you really need to consider how long they will live! If you were to get an African gray or a Macaw for example you will have a feathered friend companion for 40 to 50+ years! That requires some serious dedication and it is a large responsibility as a pet owner, not only that but if you are an older person you may have to consider that the bird will outlive you and will need a new home!

A Budgies Lifespan isn’t quite as long but before you invest your love and time into a new bird it’s important you at least ask yourself “what is the life span of a budgie?”. The average Budgie lifespan ranges from 8 to 10 years but as with any animal the life span is very dependent on proper nutrition, proper diet and even with the new advances in avian medicine a budgie can live even longer!

There is a general rule of thumb that you can follow when you want to work out the lifespan of a bird, in general the larger the bird the longer the life span and this certainly seems to hold true if we consider the African Gray and the Macaw! Regardless of the size of your bird however the lifespan of your budgie will depend solely on the right diet, the right nutrition and a good general lifestyle. Equally important to good diet is good hygiene, budgies can be susceptible to a variety of disease so it is important that you clean their cage and food areas regularly to keep your little friend safe. Most important to your budgies longevity is to regularly visit an avian vet for checkups! As mentioned earlier Avian medicine has come quite a long way in the last few years so if you are quick to act on any signs of illness you can guarantee your budgie stays in good health!
